ADAS Is on Every New Truck — Is Your Training?

Walk into any commercial dealership today and try to order a new work truck without forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, or lane departure warning. In most cases, you can’t. These features have become standard equipment on nearly every new medium-duty and heavy-duty truck on the market. That shift happened fast, and many small fleet owners are still catching up.

The problem is not the technology. These systems work. The problem is what happens when drivers don’t understand them — or worse, when they rely on them too much.

What ADAS Features Are Now Standard

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, or ADAS, is an umbrella term for the electronic safety tools built into modern commercial vehicles. The most common features on today’s work trucks include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, these technologies are now widespread across medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles and are a primary focus of federal safety research. NHTSA has already mandated automatic emergency braking on all new passenger cars and light trucks beginning with model year 2029. For commercial trucks, the push is already well underway through both regulatory pressure and insurance incentives.

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that advanced truck safety technologies — including lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and video-based safety monitoring — have the potential to prevent up to 63,000 truck-related collisions per year. That is a compelling number. However, realizing those gains requires more than just buying trucks with the right sticker options.

The Training Gap Most Fleets Ignore

Here is where things go wrong. Fleet managers order new trucks with ADAS packages, hand the keys to their drivers, and assume the safety improvements happen automatically. They don’t.

Lytx research on ADAS adoption found that driver acceptance is the primary hurdle for fleets trying to capture the benefits of ADAS investment. Some drivers distrust the systems and override them. Others go the opposite direction — they over-rely on alerts and start paying less attention to the road themselves.

Both behaviors erase the safety gains the technology is designed to deliver. Industry observers have documented instances of drivers waiting for a lane departure alert to go off before looking up from a distraction. That is not a technology problem. It is a training problem.

The FMCSA’s Tech-Celerate Now program, developed in partnership with the American Trucking Associations’ Technology and Maintenance Council and the American Transportation Research Institute, was built specifically to address this gap. The program found that ADAS technologies are significantly better understood by fleet managers than by the drivers operating the trucks every day. Closing that gap is the job of a deliberate training program.

What Good ADAS Training Looks Like

Effective ADAS training is not a one-hour onboarding session. It is an ongoing process tied to how drivers interact with these systems in real-world conditions.

Start with a clear explanation of what each system does — and what it does not do. Many drivers misunderstand automatic emergency braking as a full collision prevention system. It is not. It reduces impact speed and severity but cannot stop a truck instantly from highway speeds. Furthermore, systems like lane keeping assist can be thrown off by faded road markings, heavy rain, or snow. Drivers who understand the limitations will use the technology as the backup it is, not as the primary driver they mistakenly believe it to be.

Next, build in hands-on time. Reading about adaptive cruise control in a manual is no substitute for actually using it under supervision on a route the driver knows. Pair new drivers with experienced ones for their first several shifts in a new truck. Let them feel how the system responds, ask questions, and build confidence before they are on their own.

Then review the data. That data is a coaching tool. Use it in regular one-on-ones to show individual drivers their patterns and reinforce good habits.

ADAS, Upfits, and Calibration

There is one more issue that vocational fleet owners need to understand. ADAS systems depend on precisely aligned cameras and radar sensors to function correctly. When you add a service body, crane, aerial lift, or any other upfit to a new truck, those sensors can be affected.

The Specialty Equipment Market Association has documented how common modifications — including lift kits, larger tires, and body work — can disrupt ADAS sensor calibration. A system that is out of calibration may generate false alerts, fail to detect a real hazard, or both. For vocational trucks that are heavily upfitted, recalibration after the body work is complete is not optional — it is necessary to preserve the safety performance you paid for.

Talk to your upfitter before the work begins. Ask specifically whether their process includes ADAS recalibration and what documentation they provide. If they do not address it, find one who does.

The Insurance Connection

There is a direct financial benefit to getting ADAS training right. According to a FreightWaves analysis of 2026 fleet insurance trends, ADAS adoption has been shown to reduce crash frequency by up to 40%. However, insurers require documentation before they adjust your premium. Simply having the systems on your trucks is not enough. You need records showing the systems are active, functioning, and supported by an actual training program.

That documentation — OEM spec sheets confirming installed features, telematics records showing system engagement, and a training log for your drivers — is what moves a commercial insurance renewal in your favor.

Put the Systems to Work

ADAS technology on your new work trucks is one of the best safety investments you can make. However, the return on that investment depends entirely on how well your drivers understand and use what is already in the cab.

The trucks are ready. The question is whether your training program is keeping up.
